Upminster Windmill
A windmill, now called wind turbines,is a machine that converts the energy of wind into rotational energy by means of vanes called Sails. A windmill operates on natural energy from the wind which creates electricity. Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the earth's surface by the sun, which makes wind energy a type of solar energy. The blades of a wind turbine are specially shaped to be moved by the wind, and they work for the same reason that airplane wings work. Wind blowing across the curved surface of the blade produces lift, which pushes the blade. When the wind is blowing, all the blades turn together. The blades,or arms as some have preferred to call them, are connected to a drive shaft. The drive shafts of early windmills were used to turn mills to grind flour or to pump water. Windmills can operate alone or can be grouped together to create much more electricity. They aslo have a variety of jobs they do. These jobs are grain milling, irrigation control and power generation. Windmills have been used for over 2,000 years, dating back to ancient Persia. They are also now gaining popularity because wind energy is a type of renewable energy that never runs out because there is always more.
Theme of Violence
Napoleon fought with Snowball over who would be the better leader. Napoleon won by persuading the other animals, along with squealer by blamingall of the troublesome things upon Snowball. All of the animals trusted Napoleon and thought everything he said was right. Boxer, one of the horses, even added the phrase of "Napoen is always right" to the other one that he had been saying before"I will work harder" for his motivation to keep him going through tough times. When Napoleon found out that some of the animals were secretly working with Snowball behind his and the other animals' backs,he killed them. The animals still were convinced that he was good because he told them that snowball was the cause of their troubles, and that he was working with Mr.Jones and the other humans. Napoleon also told the animals that he would help them be free so they would not have to be ruled by humans. The quote is important to theme of violence because the pigs do not care about the other animals or the humans feelings. They are just happy that they are in control,so when Boxer apologized for his killing,it would not matter because the pigs would have more pride and control for themselves.
Theme of Power
The sheep in the story are not completely useless because as things go bad,or come to a terrible point in the story, the sheep remind the other animals that four legs are good and two legs are bad. The sheep have the power to help the animals stay equal, stick together, and remember who the real enemies are.
Theme of Power
Pride is beneficial and harmful to the animals. Pride is beneficial to the animals because it makes them work harder and stick together as well. The animals feel pride from accomplishing many tasks like the windmill and winning the battles against the humans, knowing that they soon will rule themselves and not have to take any commands or depend on any human. Yet, their pride is harmful because Napoeon and the other pigs uses it to their advantage by becoming and getting treated better than them. The animals are blinded by this because all they know and have heard from Napoleon and Squealer is that from their good deeds, they all will soon become happy and have freedom. Pride is harmful for the humans because the animals will soon take over and over power them. The humans will be under their control. The animals feel proud of being free, but the pigs feel proud of being in control, this is why the quote is important to the theme of pride.
